The New City Library supports lifelong learning and academic success. As part of that mission, the Library permits informal Tutoring in its public spaces as long as it does not interfere with the use and enjoyment of the Library by others. Tutoring is defined as one-on-one or small-group educational assistance, usually provided by a volunteer, teacher, or paid instructor.
Tutoring is allowed in designated areas only (mezzanine, banquette tables near entrance, study rooms, cafe, outdoor seating). Tutoring in the Teen Room or the Children’s Room is permitted if other options remain unavailable. Only study rooms can be reserved for Tutoring. Use of the study rooms for Tutoring must comply with the Meeting Room Policy. Tutors and students may not monopolize library space, seating, or materials.
Tutoring sessions must be kept within reasonable time limits, generally no more than two (2) hours per session unless pre-approved by staff. Repeated, long-term use of library space by tutors may be subject to review.
Conversation must be kept to a quiet level. All participants must comply with the Library’s Patron Code of Conduct Policy. Behavior that disturbs other patrons’ use of the Library may result in being asked to leave. Tutors are responsible for their students at all times.
Tutors may not advertise or solicit for-fee services on library property (for example, distributing flyers, business cards, or posting signs). Payment for Tutoring services must be arranged off-site and not within the Library.
Library staff reserve the right to relocate, limit, or end Tutoring sessions if they conflict with library policies or usage needs. Library staff may enforce time, space, and behavior guidelines as needed to ensure equitable access for all patrons.
