In January, for our Thursday afternoon movie series, we will be showing a variety of films related to the theme of "food". We will have two English language films, a Danish film and a documentary; a veritable smorgasbord for all.
On January 7th the film will be "Chocolat", starring Juliette Binoche, Judi Dench and Johnny Depp. A woman and her daughter open a chocolate shop in a small French village that shakes up the rigid morality of the community.
On January 14th the film is "Babette's Feast" a Danish language film from 1987. In 19th century Denmark, two adult sisters live in an isolated village with their father and although they can leave, they choose to stay with him. Then Babette enters their lives and things begin to change.
On January 21st we will be showing the documentary "Sturgeon Queens". Four generations of a Jewish immigrant family create Russ & Daughters, a Lower East Side lox and herring emporium that survives and thrives to this day.
