Hearts of Fire

Firefighters in fire training exerciseAre you looking to meet your perfect match, the one who makes you feel that bright spark of connection?  Maybe your last relationship lacked sizzle, and you're burning for a lover with passion.  Or perhaps you're still carrying a torch for an old flame?

If you're looking for a really hot romance, the heroes in this month's featured titles will certainly light your fire.  (And then put it out again, before anybody gets hurt.)  In honor of the 4th of July holiday, I'm featuring romances this month starring America's Bravest: firefighters.

All punning aside, there's certainly a lot to love.  To start with, there's the nature of the danger they face on a regular basis-- cops face down criminals, but firefighters battle a chaotic, elemental force, one that humans have had an uneasy relationship with since we figured out how to rub two sticks together.  There's also the appeal of a man (or woman) in uniform, of course, and (thanks to the physically demanding job) the appeal of a firefighter out of uniform.  (Carry me over the threshold? Yes, please!)  Then there's the pull of the protector-- the hero-- who regularly puts his or her life on the line of others, who runs into the fire when others are running out of it.  And hey, women are into guys who can cook. (The big trucks probably don't hurt, either.)

What make firefighters such great romantic leads, though, are the other challenges they face as part of the job.  Let's face it-- in a novel, a hero lacking flaws or challenges is a boring hero.  A firefighter will never be that.  Firefighting is a dangerous, stressful, physically and mentally demanding profession with long and often unpredictable hours.  That can be hard not only on the firefighter who's looking for something deeper than a casual hookup, but also on the partner who wants to spend time with them.  Some firefighters' partners even come to see the job as competition, wondering if their firefighter will ever be as close and trusting of them as they are of the guys with whom they've literally walked through fire.  Firefighters train regularly and have rules and procedures to keep them as safe as possible, but physical injuries-- some of them life-changing-- are always a risk.  The job can have a devastating emotional toll, too, not only when they lose a victim, but when they lose one of their own.

I expect firefighters across the country will be plenty busy this holiday weekend.  They'll ride in parades and set off the town fireworks, sure, but there will also be accidents on the highway, and backyard grilling mishaps, and folks who aren't properly cautious around sparklers or other fireworks.  While you're relaxing, they'll be at their most vigilant.  Enjoy yourself this weekend, but please-- be careful.  Make sure the only firefighters who come to your house this holiday are the ones in the pages below.  (Unless, of course, you live with one.)  Have a happy Fourth of July, everyone!
