Beyond Books: Black and White Film Festival

Image result for movie afternoon

Many of our patrons already know, and attend, our Thursday afternoon movies.  But, I am sure, there are still many individuals out there who do not know about the wonderful films we show at 2:00 every Thursday.

The series was started by our previous director, Mitch Freedman.  Since his retirement, the film series responsibilties have been shared by Harriet Wollenberg, Audiovisual Librarian and Veronica Reynolds, Coordinator of Community Relations.  Veronica and I will be alternating months for our movie choices starting in the Fall.

I will be showing the movies in September and I've chosen to have a "Black and White Film Festival".  I must admit, I myself have forgotten how wonderful some of these older films are.  They do not have the special effects and razzle dazzle of many of our present films; but boy, can they pack an emotional and intellectual punch.

Below is the list of September films:

September 3: To Kill a Mockingbird (1962).  Starring Gregory Peck

September 17:  The Apartment (1960).  Starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine

September 24:  Dr. Strangelove (1964).  Starring Peter Sellers and George C. Scott

October 1: The Grapes of Wrath (1940).  Starring Henry Fonda

All terrific and thought provoking films.

Also coming in September are the DVD releases of some of your favorite TV shows and, also, some blockbuster films.

September 1: Mad Max: Fury Road; I'll See You In My Dreams; Castle: Season 7; Madame Secretary: Season 1 and Vampire Diaries: Season 6.

September 8:  Homeland: Season 4; Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Season 2

September 15:  Furious 7; Love and Mercy; Empire: Season 1; CSI:Cyber: Season 1

September 22:  Pitch perfect 2; Modern Family: Season 6

September 29:  Spy (with Melissa Mccarthy); Poltergeist (the remake); Grimm: Season 4; Jane the Virgin: Season 1

So, as we say goodbye to Summer 2015 (sadly), we look forward to some exciting DVD releases and, of course, our Thursday afternoons at the movies.

Till next time.......
