Book Review: Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay

Darkly Dreaming Dexter
Author/Artist: Jeff Lindsay
Warning: Descriptions of Graphic Violence

Summary:

The first in the dark mystery series that inspired the hit Shotime show,
Darkly Dreaming Dexter introduces Dexter Morgan. He's a respected blood
spatter specialist for the Miami Police Department and a serial
killer! Trained by his foster policeman foster father to kill only those that
deserve it, Dexter lives and murders by a strict code.

Review:

Allowed to narrate his own story, Dexter's voice is chilling and logical. If
you like dark mysteries, you'll love this book. The tone of many of the
chapters is almost philosophical as Dexter waxes poetic about what it means
to be a monster.

Liked it

I watched the first season of the Showtime series before I read the book.  I am normally a "the book was better" snob.  :)  For me, though, I felt the series did a better, more detailed job with character development, thus making the story more compelling.  The series takes a different turn, story-wise, than the book does, and frankly I like the way the series did it better.  And I definitely have to say that for those who enjoy this book, you'll LOVE the series - which is available on DVD through the library!  :)
