Audiobooks: Your first listening experience.

I will never forget the first audiobook I heard. It was over 20 years ago and I was making lengthy car trips back and forth to work and classes. Trying to conquer boredom and fatigue, I took out a large, ugly black case and listened to a marvelous reading of Gorky Park by Martin Cruz Smith, read by Henry Strozia. I was instantly hooked. The book came alive. Every word had weight and meaning. From that day on, I was an audiobook listener. Twenty years ago, the New City Library had just two shelves of donated audiobooks on cassette. Now we have cassettes, CDs, Playaways and the Digital Download Center from the Library System. Please feel free to share with us your first listening experiences.
